French Lessons for Adults

Whether you want to learn French just to get by on holiday, for work, for an exam or to become fluent, we can work together to get you there.

If you are keen on improving your grammar, I will provide you with a test you can do at home after our first session and you can email it back to me, to clarify our focus.

Q&A

How long will it take me to learn ?

I often get asked this question by beginners.  Foreign language learning never ends anymore than it does in your own language.  It also depends upon what level you would like to reach, how much you would like to be able to say, how much you would like to understand, with who you would like to talk, etc.  It also much depends upon the time you have available to learn and to practise.

A quick answer will be :

If you just want to get by, to order in a café, to do some shopping, book a hotel, then we can do this in a few weeks.  If you want to be able to understand all the different ways in which this may be answered, that could take quite a bit longer.  If you want to be able to talk not only in the present but the past and the future, again that takes more time.

If you would like to be able to discuss philosophy, politics, science or numerous other topics, then my answer is that it will likely take you less time than it took to learn and understand them.

What does a lesson look like ?

This depends upon your level :

If you are a beginner, in the first lesson, we will work out your learning style, explore your goals, and then practise some sounds and basic introduction.  From then on, each lesson will generally include all four basic learning skills, unless we have a particular focus planned.

If you are intermediate or advanced, we will look towards increasing your general knowledge and ability to communicate, using a variety of materials, the focus dependent upon your needs, interests and purpose for learning.

Most lessons will generally include new useful vocabulary, practice / introduction of new grammar (it really can be enjoyable), relevant area of discussion and always homework, to reinforce whatever we have done in the session.  We may have sessions where we only practise using one specific skill, such as oral, reinforcing the grammar, vocabulary or structures learned.
