English and Mathematics for children with SEN

(dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADD,ADHD)

I work with children from 5 years old upwards, in English and Mathematics SEN KS3 and KS4, primarily with an emphasis on Dyslexia for the past 15 years, before more recently developing an interest in Dyscalculia for the past 4 years, level 2 Cert.

When working with young people, I first nurture a good working relationship built on fun, trust and working at their best. I look for progression on agreed goals and targets, helping them to develop self-esteem and confidence. I’ve obtained great results this way.

I am happy to follow the curriculum or to deviate from it if this enables a student to connect to letters and numbers. I use the student’s strengths, learning style and interests to guide my teaching, using visual, audio and kinaesthetic approaches.

Q&A

What does a lesson look like ?

This will very much depend upon what we have decided and how they are on that day.  Sometimes, a student may have had an upset at school and need to talk about this first before being able to settle and focus on learning.  I like to allow a safe space for this, drawing on my experience as a therapist.

We check any homework to see how they got on, going over memory and learning strategies if they find the topic particularly challenging.  Patience and creativity in teaching are key to their development.

Wherever possible, I like parents to be involved in their child’s progress, helping to reinforce strategies we worked on during the lesson, dependent upon the young person’s volition of course – sometimes, children just will not let their parents be involved in their education, but that’s fine too.  However, if they are having only 1 hour a week, they do need to reinforce what we do in the lesson whether on their own, with their parent(s) or at school.

How do I work ?

I work creatively to find solutions to each individual child’s diffiiculties, using a variety of pedagogical tools and methodoligies including kinaesthetic approaches. But like most teachers, I use my imagination for much of what I do and that of the student - as their way of learning and understanding is key to their progress.
